Blog Question Chapters 5-8 Fishbowl

“It had altered already, and would alter more. Its gold would wither into grey. Its red and white roses would die. For every sin that he committed, a stain would fleck and wreck its fairness. But he would not sin. The picture, changed or unchanged, would be to him the visible emblem of conscience. He would resist temptation” (Wilde 88) Do you think that Dorian can really resist temptation and sin? Can anyone? If he continues along the bad path he is on, what is going to happen to him and the picture?

  1. I Believe Dorian has the capability to resist temptation and I also believe we as humans can resist temptation as well. I think that hedonism affects everyone and that's why we disregard what we know is right and wrong. This, in my opinion will play a role in Dorian's life as we continue to read on. If Dorian continues the path that he is walking I believe he and the picture will slowly wither away. Just like what it is already doing.

  2. I believe that Dorian and everyone else in this world has the ability to resist temptation. However, it is a matter of strength. You must be very strong to resist temptation because it is every where each and every day. I believe the only way to resist temptation is to be guided by something. You can be guided by people around you, faith, or anything else that can be a good guide. Dorian has Lord Henry now who I believe can be a good guide to steer him away from temptation towards evil.

  3. Although I agree that resisting temptation may be extremely difficult, I do also think that it is possible, even for Dorian. As long as Dorian has someone there to influence him in the right direction, I think he can find the path away from temptation. As for all people, I think anyone can resist temptation if they really try. It relates to the hedonism idea in which some people will just give in to temptation if it feels right at the moment. Back to the picture, I think as Dorian grows old and commits sinful acts, the picture will react in physical appearance and eventually die.

  4. Resisting temptation and sin is always possible but in Dorian's case I don't think he is able to. A driving force behind why humans resist doing bad things is their own conscience. They don't want to have to deal with those guilty feelings. Since Dorian has no soul (it's in the painting) he wouldn't necessarily have those emotions. Also, I think if he continues on the bad path he is on, the painting will keep becoming more and more grotesque looking.

  5. Almost all humans can resist temptation in one way or another. I don't think that Dorian will be able to stop sinning, but I do believe that he possibly will learn to resist tempatation, which is entirely depending on the situation he is put in. I believe that we all can resist temptaion in certain situations, but then again we all can't resist temptation in certain situations. In my opinion, Dorian is most likely going to continue down the sinful path that he is on, which will only lead to his picture getting worse and worse.

  6. I believe that Dorian is more than capable of resisting temptation, but I don't think he wants to. He is so easily influenced by Lord Henry that he will keep following the path that he is directed. Dorian is starting to believe that whatever Lord Henry says is the truth, and that life really is all about personal pleasure. I think that Dorian will continue sinning, and that the magnitude of his sins will continue to increase as he changes into the person that Lord Henry is encouraging him to be.

  7. I do believe it is true that you can resist temptation, especially for Dorian and everyone else. It is not possible though to not eventually sin and give into the temptation. Everybody sins, it is just a matter of how long it takes the person to finally give into temptation. In the case of Dorian it probably won't take him to long to sin again with an influence like Lord Henry by his side. Eventually as Dorian keeps sinning and sinning the picture will continue to get worse and worse until eventually the painting is no more. The painting represents so much more than just a piece of art, the painting is Dorian and as he keeps sinning and doing wrong, the painting will continue to become more and more ugly..

  8. I believe that Dorian will continue of his path of sin for a few reasons. One, is that I believe he takes to much pleasure out of disobeying authority and rules. He takes joy out of going against the norm. Another is that because his picture takes all of his sins for him that he will think he is without reprimand. Due to this I think that he will feel he can do anything without consequence. Finally we see that Dorian has hidden the painting away so he won't have to see his sins. So I feel that by not seeing the effects of his sins he will pretend he didn't commit them. I feel that as the years go on Dorian's picture will age and show all the horrible things he has done. In the end his soul will be lost and it won't matter if he's beautiful because his soul will be condemned.

  9. Personally, I think that Dorian is easily influenced and especially by other people. There's a slight chance he could resist temptation but I highly doubt it. Also everyone sins, whether they want to or not. Therefor I believe he will sin and end up being tempted easily. In the end I feel like the portrait will become so hideous just like Dorian's personality. I feel like the portrait will have no meaning by the end of the book to Dorian or even Basil.

  10. I do not believe Dorian will be able to resist the temptation of sin. I do think that the great majority of people would be able to, if they so wanted to though. The greatest issues I see in Dorian, are Mrs.Smith's point about him not having a soul anymore, and that he is simply too naive and impressionable. In Chapter 9, Dorian talks to Basil about how all must just be forgotten, and therefore he feels no real remorse for any of his actions- All of which he learned and adopted from Lord Henry, showing his incredible impressionability. Throughout the rest of the book, I believe that Dorian will further his deterioration into a worse person, as well as his picture will transform further to reveal the monster he will become. I am quite interested for the remainder of the book.

  11. Dorian is the type of person that pursues his pleasures, and I think that as long as he continues to satisfy his temptations he will feel bad for himself. The reason Dorians portrait is changing seems to be caused by his impulse of decisions and the image he sees of himself gets uglier maybe because those decisions make him lose himself. To me, I think that the longer Dorian continues to feel bad for himself then the worse the image on the portrait will get. Who knows, maybe Dorian will realize it is just a painting and that he should just stop seeking to please himself?

  12. I do believe that humans can resist temptations if they really need to, but also one's self pleasure is a natural thing for a person to pursue. However Dorian is very big on doing things for himself and only what he wants and with Lord Henry being such an awful influence on him he will only keep sinning. Hedonism is just to much of a factor for Dorian and I don't think he can resist. He may try to stop for a little but quickly return to sinning and his portrait will turn into a very ugly mess of colors mashed together.

  13. I absolutely think he will sin. Sin is defined as an immoral act that goes against divine law. Dorian, being the type to actively pursue self indulgence, cannot avoid the path of sin. Every human on the planet sins, including our good buddy, Dorian Gray.

  14. Ever since Dorian's soul has been locked away in the painting his character has changed into a more sinful persona. I believe that he will continue on the path of his sinful nature but he will cover up these feelings because he knows deep down that he is wrong. Before Henry put his opinion on Sybil's death, Dorian was severely depressed and was seeking forgiveness. Without Henry, Dorian will be able to truly mourn his sins and be able to move on correctly.

  15. I don't think Dorian will be able to resist the temptations; there are too many factors in play that can alter his psyche. First, there's his pride; he seeks self fulfillment and goes after things that are pleasant to him. Second, there are all of the people around him who I think will eventually steer him the wrong way. When all is said and done, I think the portrait will be hideous because Dorian will not have had enough will power to resist all the temptarions around him.

  16. I feel that Dorian can resist temptation it just after he will see that it is going to be that he is hurting the ones he loves. I believe that anyone can resist temptation but it is easier to give in to it. If he continues on this path he will end up hurting the one's he loves the most and the picture will fad away

  17. I don't think Dorian will be able to resist sin and temptation. To a certain degree, no one can. But as long as the portrait of him takes on the effects of his sin, he'll continue on the path he's on. He doesn't seem to have much of a conscience, so he doesn't have much reason to quit.

  18. No one can resist all sin so there is no way that he can. He always is tempted by something new so there will always be sin for him to commit. I believe that everyone will commit sin and there is no way to avoid the temptations I it. If he continues on the path he is on now the picture will in a way die I think.

  19. It is impossible for humans to resist temptation. In the Greek mythology story a woman istold that she must deliver a box but must not open it to see whats inside. She could not resist the temptation and did so. Another similay story is of Adam and Eve where Eve was told to never eat of the forbidden fruit. She gave in and took a bite. Since the beginning of time humans have always gave in to temptation. I believe Dorian will follow into the pattern and give in. Also i believe he is weak minded and he could be tricked in to temptation like Eve was.
