Act 4 Question

Do you think Hamlet purposely got onto the pirate ship? If so do you think he knew about Claudius's plan?

  1. Yes I think that Hamlet does have a plan and he knows about Claudius's plan. Even though Hamlet is portrayed as going crazy, he still has an idea of whats going on and a plan of how he is going to kill Claudius. Also, he probably suspects something from Claudius because of the way Claudius treats him and Claudius's crave for power.

  2. I do not think that Hamlet purposely got onto the pirate ship. Claudius tricked him into doing it and he had no idea about the plan. Hamlet is easily manipulated throughout this play because he is so insane.

  3. I think he did purposefully get onto the pirate ship. He knew that something was happening with his friends and Claudius that couldn't be good. He also knew that something bad had to be happening to send him away to England by Claudius. He still has some idea of his surroundings even though he seems to have gone crazy.

  4. I will have to disagree with Elle and her comment. I think Hamlet purposely got on that ship not due to being "insane' but because he is aware of everything that is going on. So yes, he knows, I think about Claudius plan to sabotage him. Payback in his eyes.

  5. Hamlet is very clever at manipulating people's feelings and thoughts. Overall, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern became transparent to him, and he knows very well how desperate Claudius is to get rid of him, and since he has already killed one family member, who said he couldn't do it again? So everyone around him is not to be trusted, and after seeing Fortinbras actually act upon his beliefs, the last thing Hamlet would want to do is stay a man of inaction at even a greater distance from Claudius. The Pirate may have just been an excuse, but he will take any opportunity to get back to his plans of killing Claudius.

  6. I definitely think that Hamlet intentionally boarded the pirate ship and knew that there was some sort of malicious plan set forth by Claudius when he was sent to England. I don't think Hamlet knew exactly what Claudius had in mind, though, but I'm sure he expected something bad enough to try and escape that fate.

  7. I think Hamlet is the kind of character who picks up on things like Claudius' plan to kill him in England, and therefore he needs to find some way to save himself, but he didn't have a plan involving the pirate ship and found it as a convenient escape plot. So essentially, because Hamlet is so much a man of inaction, he ends up doing things rashly in moments that seem like the best action. Like killing Polonius in the bedroom.

  8. Yes I think Hamlet definitely got onto the pirate ship on purpose. It seems like Hamlet has a plan, and knows what he is doing in this situation. Hamlet already knows that Claudius has used Rosencrants & Guildenstern to try to manipulate Hamlet in the past, and that Claudius will not hesitate to do it again. I feel like Hamlet knew that there was something strange about Claudius sending him to England, and he possibly had suspicions of his plans for Hamlet to be murdered so he purposely got onto the wrong boat.

  9. I think that Hamlet has a suspicion of Claudius' plan. It'd be hard not to because it's almost common sense when thinking about all that Hamlet did to poke papa bear. The play, the harassment of the Queen, killing Polonious; all things that would lead to Claudius hoping to kill Hamlet. Hamlet's a smart guy and I'm sure he had this in mind when he got on the boat.

  10. I think that Hamlet is smart enough to notice the plan that is unraveling around him. He also probably has a plan that will be beneficial to himself. He will be able to find the good in a very meek situation

  11. I do believe that hamlet secretly has a purpose for his madness and that getting on the pirate ship is included in his plan. He obviously knew if he were to continue on with R&G that he was either going to die or not a happy outcome would occur. I think that when hamlet returns that he will finally get his revenge.

  12. I think Hamlet intentionally boarded the ship. Hamlet is a very smart cookie. He noticed that Claudius was enraged at the play so he knew that this was to come. Hamlet would be suspicious of being sent to England since Claudius had wanted him to go to Wittenberg to study in the start of the play. This is most likely part of his plan for revenge on Claudius to make him feel more irresponsible for letting Hamlet, the crazed mad-man, off his leash again.

  13. Yes, I think Hamlet purposely boarded the ship. Thus far, Hamlet has always seemed to have a plan brewing in his head as to what he will do and how to use different characters in the play in order to get it done. Also, I think Hamlet is too smart not to realize that Claudius may have something up his sleeve. He already caught on that his friends were being used as spies, and I think Hamlet boarded the pirate ship to avoid whatever he may have thought was in store for him on the ship he was supposed to be on.

  14. I think that Hamlet did purposely got onto the ship. I also think that he is a very observant person and was aware of Cladius's plan. I don't think that he knew exactly what it was but I think that if he is smart enough to figure out people were spying on him he can figure out that Cladius's is up to something.

  15. Hamlet boarded the pirate ship with a purpose. he still wants revenge on claudius and knows what to do to get it. getting on the ship is just a part of his plan.

  16. Yes, I think he did porously got on the pirate ship because it was a little to much of a coincidence that Hamlet suddenly comes back to Denmark. He obviously knew Claudius sent him to England as part of his plan, so Hamlet figured out his plan and figured out a way to get back to England. Hamlet is to smart to be fooled by Claudius' silly plans.

  17. Hamlet seems to be going insane throughout the story, however I still feel as though he has a lot of tactical plans and ideas on how to avenge his father. So, due to this, I think Hamlet purposely got on the ship.

  18. I think Hamlet did purposely get on the pirate ship. He is only portraying that he is crazy to those around him because he wants them to be distracted while he plans his vengeance against Claudius, and he always seems to be one step ahead of Claudius.

  19. I think Hamlet, did in-fact get on the pirate ship on purpose. Hamlet's insanity may be driven by fear/anger which can be a weakness, but he is still driven by one goal: Revenge. He wants to keep CLaudius on his toes, so that he can fulfill his plan to avenge his dad's death.
