Hamlet Blog Post for Act Two

Do you think it is possible that Hamlet is truly going insane, due to the recent events that have taken place?

  1. It would not surprise me if Hamlet was a little insane. First he was depressed with the death of his father. Now he has seen a ghost telling him to kill his uncle who is a murderer. Hamlet is really confused and lost right now in his life. It’s just not healthy mentally to be driven by revenge. It is easy to become obsessed and then crazy when attempting revenge. At the end of Act 2, Hamlet questions his actions and argues with himself but soon all thought of reason is forgot when Hamlet focuses on catching the king.

    1. Hamlets could easily be going insane. Like Kimberly stated above, at that the end of act 2 he questions his actions. Since he may be getting obsessed with revenge this could defiantly make him go insane. Obsession is a from of insanity.

  2. I think that it may be possible that Hamlet is going insane, however personally I do not think this is the case. I think he truly wants to avenge his father, and I believe he is completely in his right mind when doing so. He loved his father so much, and I feel as though Hamlet is willing to go to great lengths to see what actually happened to his father.

  3. There is a possibility that Hamlet is going slightly insane, but in my opinion i do not think he is. Hamlet just wants to avenge his father, because of his uncle murdering his father and fooling around with his mother. Anyone would do that same and Hamlet is right on track.

  4. The element of insanity is definitely relevant in Hamlet's case. In recent events, it seems Hamlet is smothering some feelings of anger and denial, not fully believing the idea that the father he has loved for so long is suddenly gone, plus his mother's sudden, hasty marriage to Claudius, along with Claudius' climb to the throne. Through these feelings an insanity might be fueled, to give him reason to hate Claudius and have some form of closure in his father's death. Overall, Hamlet is desperately looking for violence and revenge on his father's behalf based on all recent, suspicious events.

  5. I think that it could in fact be possible for Hamlet to be going insane do to the horrible events that have taken place recently, but I, like John, personally think that Hamlet isn’t insane. I think that he is in fact distraught over his father’s death and wants so badly to avenge his death that he will do everything in his power to do so. Part of this plan is making himself look insane to others to avert attention from his real plan and I believe that he is succeeding in making others see him as insane.

  6. Perhaps. At a glance, one can see that Hamlet is merely acting insane in order to further advance his plan. However, it's possible that through his obsession with Claudius' confession, Hamlet has truly gone insane. After the the ghost reveals Claudius' foul intentions, Hamlet became bent on the perfect plan, which would expose Claudius for what he truly is.

  7. It is highly possible that the recent events have driven Hamlet to insanity. Many people would have emotional problems after just the death of a parent and the hasty marriage of the other; Hamlet has to deal with King Hamlet's death, his mother marrying Claudius, and then on top of that the possibility of his father having been murdered by his own brother. The level of emotional distress that Hamlet has been subjected to is immense and that could easily be causing him to hallucinate and actually be mad.
Despite this possibility, good could come of the madness. Quite often, genius is attached to madness and that could be influencing Hamlet's ingenious plot to catch Claudius. The fact that he could legitimately be insane means that he might see even just the smallest gesture by Claudius as suspicious, so he must be careful to not be incorrect in his assumptions.
I also think that the ghost might have chosen to come to Hamlet at the time that it did, when he was vulnerable, because the ghost may have known that Hamlet was just crazy/depressed enough to follow the directions it was giving, as opposed to someone who was completely sane, who might simply write the ghost off due to something like exhaustion induced hallucinations.

  8. I think there is a possibility that he may be going insane. Although i would lean towards the idea that he has let his mind succumb to the situation, and he is just getting carried away. I think he is becoming obsessed with revealing claudious and bring about justice. I think he is also brilliant in the way he is going about it. He is trying to create a subtle confession rather than forcing a confession. I dont think that is crazy, i think it is obsession. I also think that this obsession could also lead to his downfall, but i still do not think he is crazy, yet.

  9. Yes I think Hamlet is starting to go insane. I think from seeing the ghost and all of the trauma that he has gone through with his dad dying, I think he is starting to break down. I think he feels the pressure to bring justice to his fathers death, but also find a way to make Claudius confess. Hamlet also might feel that when he is acting crazy, its a way that he can let out his anger and all of his weird feelings out. I think it has started to be his release.

  10. No, I don't think Hamlet is insane. It seems more like distressed due the immense amounts of pressure that has been put on him lately, with his father's death and only a brief moment to grieve. To add to all this stress, he sees the ghost of his father who tells him of his murder. Now with the added stress of trying to get justice for his father, Hamlet has more stress put on him than imaginable. I don't think Hamlet is insane, but I do think it could be a possibility later in the play.

  11. I think that it’s extremely possible that Hamlet is going insane. I think any normally functioning person whose father was killed by his uncle will go insane due to the circumstances and inability to cope. Hamlet can be using his insanity card so much that he forgets how to act as he used to do. He may be more comfortable acting out his frustration rather than keeping all the past events bottled up inside. I believe that Hamlet thinks this will be his last act, to seek revenge upon his uncle, so he will go all out and forget who he once was before.

  12. I believe that Hamlet might of possibly gone insane. Having his father die was hard for him the on top of that his uncle married his mother and took his place as king. Then he so happened to hear for a ghost that either could be his dad or a ghost that his uncle actually killed his dad. Then while "faking" going crazy he could stay in that state of mind and actually become crazy. Plus all this is making me go crazy so he may or may not be going crazy as his life goes on.

  13. I do not believe Hamlet is going truly going insane. Yes he has witnessed tragic events and is trying to reveal Claudius as the killer. I believe he is putting on an act to draw attention to himself so that clausius comes closer to him. that is the point of the play that Hamlet is putting on. He is not going insane he has a plan mthat will unfold revealing the secrets of his fathers death.

  14. I think there is a possibility of a role of insanity coming into play because Hamlet has in fact just lost his father. When you lose a loved one it could be one of the methods of grieving. Also he is being handed very strange stories of ghosts and how his father has "actually" died. This could have also been one of the reasons why Hamlet has come off "insane." Hopefully Hamlet does not make a rash decision based off what he is thinking because this could potentially alter his life choices.

  15. Considering all of the things Hamlet had to encounter within such a short amount of time, I believe he could go insane. His own uncle killed his father and his now sleeping with his mom, which would permanently mess anyone up. But now he has to avenge his father who is somewhat haunting him as a ghost. If any normal person was in Hamlet's shoes, I think they'd lose it too.

  16. I think that Hamlet could very well be going a bit insane. Having such tramatizing events such as your father being murdered could obvioulsy "mess" anyone up. But because Hamlet continually sees a goast and plans out the murder of Claudius I think that this could make him slightly insane.

  17. No, I don't believe Hamlet is actually going insane. He has a clear plan and a clear way to accomplish his plan. If he was truly going insane there is no way he could have come up with such an ingenious way up trying to catch Claudius and prove he is guilty. To me there is no way a sane person could thing of something as brilliant as that. If Hamlet were actually going crazy he would not have thought of something a plan so elaborate if he were crazy.

  18. Yes, I think he could truly go insane. He has been given such heartbreaking information about his fathers death it would be logical for him to be deeply hurt by it. I also think he can start to go insane because he is losing the love of his life, Opheilia, and he is learning that his friends aren't good friends. He is also having to hold in a dark secret about his mother's husband that is working to tear him apart from the inside out.

  19. No, Hamlet is not actually going insane. He is acting logically to determine if his uncle really did kill his father, if he was truly insane he would act before planning. Also, multiple people have seen the ghost who is his father so he did not invent the vision in his mind.

  20. I think Hamlet has actually gone insane. Often times, due to the mixing of royal families generation after generation, princes and kings and queens turned out a little bit unstable. Also, Hamlet is a very emotionally involved in the events and actions of Claudius and Gertrude, and the stress of it could eventually drive him to a breaking point.

  22. The idea that Hamlet is going insane is genius because no one will realize what he is truly up to in his mind. He is putting on his own play by taking his friends and lover, and making them pawns on his playing board. His main goal is to get the killer of his father and his plan seems to be working so far. I do believe that he is going insane and that he is not just acting. The events in his life are effecting him greatly whether he wants them to or not.

  23. I defiantly believe that he is going insane, because Hamlet feels alone and abandoned since his father has been murdered, his mother has already remarried his fathers brother, and now his uncle Claudius is king. Hamlets fathers ghost is asking him to avenge his death which is asking hamlet to go against his conscious, and his friends from the university are stabbing him in the back. on top of all of that drama Hamlet is having to deal with issues between him and Ophelia. All of these issues keep piling up and is causing Hamlet to go insane.

  24. I think a part of him is just dealing with the grief over the loss of his father. I don't think he's truly going insane. He's motivated by his grief to go through with his vengeance on Claudius. Claudius has given Hamlet enough reason to believe that he killed his brother, next to Hamlet also having been told by his father's ghost. Knowing that the ghost was also seen by two other men, I think Hamlet is still grounded and thinking practically about his next moves.
